Background and Analysis:

Olympia’s Downtown Strategy received a 2017 planning award from the Washington chapter of the American Planning Association and the Planning Association of Washington (APA/PAW). The award honors communities for their outstanding contribution to the field of planning in Washington. The Downtown Strategy won in the category of comprehensive/downtown improvement planning, and was recognized for its extensive public process, use of graphics and example of:

 

                     Outstanding application of planning principles

                     Implementation of community values

                     Furtherance of the Growth Management Act

                     Suitability of the solution to the problem

                     Innovative and creative solutions

                     Difficulty of problems addressed

                     Contribution to social equity

 

Olympia’s Downtown Strategy (DTS) aims to move the community’s Comprehensive Plan vision for Downtown forward. Structured around a concept of Connecting People, Places and Spaces, the DTS identifies public priorities and a set of realistic, impactful actions to be carried out by the City and partners over the next 5 years.
