Background and Analysis:
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans. The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) is the first nationwide evaluation of municipal laws affecting the LGBT community and examines the laws, policies, and progress toward equality being made by US cities and municipalities. Olympia was first evaluated in the MEI in 2013 and will be evaluated again in 2014. This resolution supports the MEI as a road map of goals that will have a positive effect on the lives of our LGBT employees, citizens, and visitors, and guests.
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
Olympia's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual citizens and supporters will be pleased to see the City's support for the HRC MEI's goals because they reflect local support for equal rights for everyone.
