Annual Retreat Format - Continued Discussion

Staff Recommended Action

Provide direction to staff on a refined proposal for the Planning Commission fall retreat.

Report

Issue:

The format of the Planning Commission’s retreat varies from year to year. This year’s retreat is scheduled for September 26.  After having received Commissioner input, staff is seeking direction on a refined proposed retreat agenda.

Staff Contact:

Stacey Ray, Senior Planner, Community Planning and Development Department, 360.753.8597

Presenter:

Discussion to be led by Commission Chair

Background and Analysis:

The Commission has selected the morning (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) of Saturday, September 26, 2015, for an annual retreat. The LOTT Boardroom has been reserved for this event.

Retreat planning is being done by the full Commission. To date Commission discussion of the format has focused on the broad topics of downtown and the economy, plus Commission procedures and relationships. Tentative guests include the City’s new Economic Development Director, Renée Sunde, and the new Principal Planner for current planning, Tim Smith.  (See minutes of the June 15 and July 6 meetings for more information.)

City staff will share a proposed retreat agenda based on previous Commission discussions (Attachment A).  Staff seeks direction on the proposed agenda, including if the Commission is ready for staff to move forward on securing the desired guests and preparing appropriate background materials to support planned agenda topics.

Neighborhood/Community Interests:

Minimal; the Commission’s retreat is open to the public to observe and a few interested parties usually attend.

Options:

Provide direction to Staff as the Commission deems appropriate.

Financial Impact:

Support for one annual Commission retreat is funded in Community Planning and Development Department budget.
