Work Session on Bicycle Corridor Pilot Project

Recommended Action
Discuss possible routes for a pilot bike corridor

Report
Issue:
Council funded a pilot Bike Corridors program for 2014. The BPAC was presented with the results of an initial staff analysis of possible routes at the February 26, 2014 meeting. This is an opportunity for the BPAC to further evaluate the street network and develop its route recommendations.

Presenter(s):
Michelle Swanson, Senior Program Specialist, Public Works Transportation, 360.753.8575.

Background and Analysis:
In response to the initial staff analysis, the BPAC advised staff that the pilot route should meet two criteria:

1. It should appeal to the "interested but concerned" cyclists, and
2. It should be either a through north/south or east/west route

During the March 26th meeting, BPAC members shared their experiences riding the routes proposed by staff, including experiences of friends or family members who accompanied them and identified as "interested but concerned."

Also on March 26th, the BPAC formed a subcommittee to continue exploring the matter of identifying a few strong candidates for the pilot project. As staff and the co-chairs discussed agenda planning for this meeting, it became clear there was time and interest to continue the discussion during the full committee meeting. Therefore the subcommittee did not meet, in order for the full committee to continue the discussion.

If a consensus emerges during the work session on a few route candidates for the pilot project, staff will evaluate them further for feasibility and report back to the BPAC. If not, the subcommittee may choose to meet before the May 28th BPAC meeting and report back to the full committee at that date.
