Title
Discussion about Outreach to Neighborhoods

Report
Issue:
Commissioner Parker requested this discussion item as a follow up to the Joint Planning Commission/Coalition of Neighborhoods Meeting on April 7, 2014.

Presenter(s):
Commissioner Jerry Parker

Background and Analysis:
Outreach to neighborhood residents is vital to facilitate collaborative and productive community planning and development. The Coalition of Neighborhoods Steering Committee expressed some challenges to this outreach at the April 7 meeting, including: City's use of jargon, information received late in the process, misinformation in the community, fear about neighborhood change, and the challenge of engaging with a broad and diverse representation of busy neighbors. The Planning Commission has a 2014 Work Item to review the Neighborhood Center Code, and desires a high level of participation from neighborhood residents. This and other issues prompt a need for the Planning Commission to discuss how to conduct good outreach with neighborhoods.
