Issue:
What to include on the draft 2017 Heritage Commission Work Plan to be submitted to the City Council for final approval.

Background and Analysis:
The Heritage Commission will review its approved 2016 Work Plan (Attachment 1) and recommend topics to include on its draft 2017 Work Plan.

In addition to the ideas brought forward by Commissioners, here are some specific recommendations from City staff:

1.b. Conduct Heritage-Related Ordinance Review and Monitoring:
Strengthen the language to state that, with staff support, the Commission will review and make recommendations on OMC 18.12 (Historic Preservation) and OMC 3.60 (Special Valuation). It is a 2017 staff priority to address inconsistencies, inaccurate nomenclature, and outdated process descriptions.

2.c. Review and Provide Input on City Planning Projects and Develop Familiarity with Other Regulatory and Budgetary Frameworks Relevant to Olympia's Heritage:
Specifically refer to the design review standards phase of the Downtown Strategy and remove Community Renewal Area.

Add 2.d. Support the Development of Cultural Resource Outreach Program for City Staff and Volunteers:
Parks staff and the City's Historic Preservation Officer would like to develop an outreach program to increase awareness of staff working in City parks on how to anticipate and appropriately respond to the discovery of archaeology and other features significant to Tribes and other communities.

3.b. Pursue and Enhance Partnerships and Integration with other City Advisory Boards, Organizations and Advocacy Groups:
Specifically call out the Arts Commission.
