Sea Level Rise Planning - Update

Report

UAC Deliverable:

Briefing only

Staff Contact:

Andy Haub, Water Resources Director, 360.753.8475

Background and Analysis:

We continue to set the stage for the planning effort.  Initial administration needs have taken longer than anticipated. We have spent several months on a formal consultant selection process, the development of an interlocal agreement between Olympia, the Port of Olympia and LOTT Clean Water Alliance, and a contract with the consultant.

Regardless, we continue to make meaningful upfront progress.  For example, organizing the many layers of technical information we have gathered over the years has been time consuming, but essential.

Coming out of the February 8th community update on sea rise, we more fully understand the importance of developing an in-depth scope of work and associated communication plan to share with our community.  These are, in and of themselves, key elements of the plan.  The three jurisdictions and our consultant (AECOM, Inc.) are focusing on these two items.  This initial effort will continue with eventual buy-in from elected officials, executives, and the community.  Then, technical and planning work can proceed efficiently.

Staff will provide the UAC with an update on our thoughts about the scope of work and communications.  We will request your input.

Financial Impact:

None at this time.  However, responding to sea level rise will require substantial long-term commitment. The plan will identify likely costs and suggest implementation timelines.
