Continued discussion on the selection of Preservation Award recipients for 2017 and a Preservation Month theme for 2018.

Background and Analysis:
Following an initial discussion of these topics at its August 23, 2017 meeting, the Heritage Commission determined to come to decisions at tonight's meeting. Below is a summary of what was discussed:

Preservation Awards

1. The basic criteria that will be used for selection are that the award(s) be for:

* Something which relates back to (a) historic place(s) in Olympia (not just people or historical events that are not tied to Olympia locations); and

* Excellence in historic preservation (a project); and/or

* A champion for historic preservation or historic places; and/or

* Excellence in scholarly work related to historic preservation.

2. The potential nominations raised at the meeting were:

* Maurice "Mo" Major - An archaeologist with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, who has been an important, "in the trenches" advocate for the protection of archaeological, historic, and other cultural resources in Priest Point Park. [Stephen Austin to prepare nomination form]

* 222 Market Owners and Tenants - For nominating the building for the Olympia Heritage Register, extensive rehabilitation of the building into a vibrant commercial hub, and for enthusiastically partnering on 2017 Preservation Month's celebration of the Olympia Oyster. [Ben Helle to preparing nomination form]

* Department of Enterprise Services - For recent restoration projects on the Capitol Campus, including the Tivoli Fountain. [Holly Davies to prepare nomination form]
