Title

Recommended Action

Staff Recommendation:

Move to approve the proposed change to the Lateral Police Officer experience requirement.

Report

Staff Contact:

Dan Duncan, Sergeant, Olympia Police Department, 360.753.8300

Nicole Camus, Personnel Analyst, Human Resources, 360.753.8213

Background

Currently the experience requirement for consideration as a lateral police officer requires employment with a municipal or county law enforcement agency. It is the desire of the police department to remove that requirement and allow those with work experience with other types of law enforcement agencies to apply as lateral police officers so long as they have passed a law enforcement academy that meets the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.

Findings:

The proposed classification change reflects the department’s operational needs to recruit from a large and diverse candidate pool.
