Background and Analysis:
Among the Heritage Commission’s responsibilities is to “raise awareness of Olympia’s history and historic resources” (OMC 18.12.055(A)). Preservation Awards are one of the Commission’s main outreach activities.
Annual Preservation Awards are presented to individuals or organizations who demonstrate excellence in heritage protection. The awards are presented in the late fall/early winter.
In past years, the Commission forms a sub-committee to manage the nomination and selection process. Following a review of nominations, the Preservation Award Committee puts forward its shortlist of recommendations to the Commission for final selection. City staff produce award certificates that are presented by the City Council as a Special Recognition item.
