Background and Analysis:

Work is underway on the Transportation Master Plan. This is the first plan of this type for the City of Olympia. The plan will define the long-term development of the transportation system for all modes of travel and the associated funding strategy.

At the meeting, staff will provide a briefing on the status of the project, what we learned from recent outreach, an overview of current transportation revenues and expenditures, and an outline of next steps. The proposed plan will include two significant new elements: a low-stress bicycle network and a methodology for achieving “system completeness” on our major streets. The briefing will be an opportunity to introduce the City Council to these new planning approaches and elements of the plan.

Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):

Public input was sought in the fall of 2018 using an in-person open house and an online interactive tool called a story map. Input from the fall outreach indicated general support for the proposed approach to project identification and prioritization. Public outreach will continue in subsequent steps in plan development.

Options:

Briefing only.

Financial impact:

The total cost of the plan is $300,000, funded through a variety of transportation sources.
