Background and Analysis:

The City’s Waste ReSources utility provides recycling collection services to residential and multi-family customers within the City. All of the recyclable materials on the City’s acceptable items list (glass, cans, cardboard, mixed paper, some plastics, etc.) are collected and “commingled” in one collection bin.

The City has a contract with Pioneer Recycling Services, LLC to receive, sort, process and market all of the City’s commingled recyclables. All of the City’s recyclables are processed at the Pioneer facility in Tacoma.

City Council will tour the facility to learn more about the processing of the City’s recyclables, and changes in the recycle industry and markets in recent years. This will set the stage for a City Council study session on the Waste ReSources Utility on September 17, 2019.
