Design Review Board Annual Retreat: Expanding Incentives for Good Design

Report

Issue:

The Olympia Design Review Board is deeply committed to enabling the development community to create and construct buildings that bring value to the community. The purpose statements in Olympia Municipal Code 18.100.040, as well as the specific regulations found in Chapters 18.110 through 18.180, provide the means for fulfilling that mission.

Public Notification:

Public notice of the retreat was distributed in an e-news release on November 12, 2019, Public Release & Public Notices.

Presenters:

Jami Heinricher, Chair, Olympia Design Review Board

Background and Analysis:

The Olympia Design Review Board will hold an annual retreat on Saturday, November 16, from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the Olympia Center, Room 200. This portion of the agenda will focus on the whole breadth of the Board’s roles and responsibilities.

Chairwoman Heinricher will share practical ideas for the Board to more fully meet the intent and purpose of design review in Olympia, as established in Olympia Municipal Code 18.100.020 and .040. Providing Board-derived handouts for developer and architect-applicants, developing informational displays to position during Design Review Board meetings, and attending pre-submittal conferences are just a few of the ways the Board can reach out and ‘get ahead’ of development proposals - to support a clearer culture around good design.
