Background and Analysis:

Each year in May, the City of Olympia celebrates our local history and heritage by declaring May to be Heritage Month and hosting a series of educational events. This year’s Heritage Month focus has necessarily been shifted to online offerings, which will be strengthened and expanded throughout the year.

In 2020, as we celebrate the centennial of Women’s Suffrage, the Heritage Commission has been inspired to recognize not only Olympia’s Suffrage pioneers, but also the many women since that time, whose ambitions were affirmed and spirits strengthened by the incredible determination and commitment of those early suffragists.

A small but diverse series of biographies of Women of Olympia has been developed and is available on the City website, to pay tribute to these individuals and share their stories.  A number are accompanied by reflections written by contemporary women of Olympia, including Mayor Cheryl Selby. The small host of contributors to this undertaking are listed on the website and City staff extend gratitude for their contributions.
