Background and Analysis:
The City of Olympia joins communities and organizations throughout the nation in celebrating National Payroll Week, honoring the nation’s employees who keep America working, and the payroll professionals who pay them. National Payroll Week coincides with the week of Labor Day and highlights the achievements and symbiotic partnerships between America’s employees, payroll professionals and various government programs and agencies.
Payroll professionals are on the front line in helping to get America paid and keeping employees educated and informed on how paychecks are calculated and the changes that impact their bottom line. Together, through payroll withholding, payroll professionals contribute, collect, report and deposit 70 percent of the U.S. Treasury’s annual revenue, about $2.4 trillion per year.
In 2019, the City’s average payroll run included approximately 654 employees. Olympia’s Payroll team issued nearly 16,000 payments via hard copy check or direct deposit for employees’ earnings, withholdings and deductions.
During this COVID-19 pandemic, a timely paycheck is more important than ever. Juggling the logistics of working remotely and onsite, Olympia’s Payroll team has continued to provide critical payroll services to assure City employees get paid correctly and on time.
