Background and Analysis:
One of the stated purposes of the Ad Hoc Committee on Public Safety is to consider recommendations to Council regarding budget options that will create a public safety system that works for all. Staff will present information and budget impacts on services, programs, equipment and technology that moves the City toward a more equitable and just public safety system.
The recommendations address how we respond to our community, data tracking and accountability. The recommendations include the Homeless Coordinator and support, Downtown Ambassadors, the expansion of the Crisis Response Unit, OFD Cares, body cameras, the Police Auditor and enhancements to data tracking in the City Prosecutor’s Office. Although some of these programs and services have been part of the City for a few years, they either need additional, permanent or new funding.
Staff will discuss how the enhancement/program addresses reimagining public safety, the budget impact and implementation schedule. Based on feedback from the Ad Hoc Committee, staff will present the Public Safety 2022 budget considerations to the Finance Committee on October 20.
Neighborhood/Community Interests (if known):
A Community Work Group is engaging with the public in 10-12 listening sessions in the Fall to reimagine public safety to create a system that reduces inequities and eliminates bias. The Community Work Group is on track to present recommendations to the City Council in early 2022.
