Background and Analysis:
The Heritage Review Committee reviewed this nomination in July 2021 and found that it merits local listing because it meets the requirements of OMC 18.12.080:
• The home has significant character and value as part of the heritage and cultural characteristics of the City;
• is at least fifty (50) years old;
• possesses at least two (2) elements of integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship;
• is well-maintained; and
• falls into at least one of the categories A through L.
The home exhibits significance in categories A, B, D and E:
OMC 18.12.080:
A. Is significantly or substantially a part of or connected with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of national, state or local history.
B. Embodies the distinctive architectural characteristics of a type, period, style or method of design or construction, or represents a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction.
D. Exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City’s cultural, social, economic, political, aesthetic, engineering or architectural history.
E. Is significantly or substantially a part of or connected with the lives of persons significant in national, state or local history.
The home is in excellent condition and is easily recognizable as Ready-Cut Home model #361 constructed by Tumwater Lumber Mills homes for its first owner in 1924. It reflects a time and place within the development of the South Capitol Neighborhood National Historic District and the city of Olympia, and is associated with locally important social and political history through its past owners.
The original owner of the home was Maude Tamblin, a single mother who served for nine years as the Secretary to the Board of Public Lands. She ran unsuccessfully for State Lands Commissioner in 1912, the first year that women were eligible to run for statewide office in Washington State.
Ernest L. “Bud” and Barbara Meyer purchased the house in 1947 and raised nine boys in the home. Bud Meyer was a prominent attorney in Olympia for 60 years, served for a period as City Attorney, and was involved in many civic affairs. The home continues to be owned by the Meyer family and was approved for special valuation in 2019 following an interior rehabilitation and restoration.
Notification of this public hearing was mailed to the property owner/applicant, posted on the site, and published in a newspaper of general circulation in Olympia, not less than ten (10) days prior to this hearing.
